UC HFAR Presents Future heat stress will dramatically reduce agricultural labor capacity, reducing food security, and disrupting global economies

The January UC HFAR webinar will feature Dr. Matt Huber (EAPS) who will discuss the limits of human heat tolerance and its impact on the agricultural labor supply. While rising temperatures are a growing concern for many, the unique challenges they pose for farmworkers and the agricultural workforce often go unnoticed. Heat stress can significantly impact labor productivity, worker safety, and ultimately, our food supply.


Equally important to understanding individual heat tolerance is identifying the geographical areas that will bear the brunt of increasing temperatures. Do these regions have the necessary resources to mitigate heat stress?


By understanding the implications of heat stress on agricultural labor, we can begin to identify measures to safeguard workers’ health, improve working conditions, and develop adaptation strategies for rising temperatures in the food and agricultural sectors.
